2011-Projects of the Year

2011 Rehab Project of the Year Winner: CIPP of Leaking High-Pressure Cast Iron Main

A leaking gas pipe doesn’t, on the surface, scream Project of the Year winner but when you listen to how this project unfolded and how the problem was solved, there’s no question that it is a truly innovative and challenging project, deserving of such a distinction.

The project in Paterson, N.J., brings a lot to the table — inventiveness, ingenuity and patience. Who would have thought that a 700-ft gas main would be the center of so much fuss? Freezing temps, an innovative robotics device and a carbon fiber sleeve were key elements in this project.

2011 Rehab Runner Up: Miami-Dade Large Diameter Pipeline Assessment & Rehab

One of the largest utilities in the United States, Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) services a 400-sq mile area, treating and distributing water to 14 municipalities while collecting and treating wastewater from 11 municipalities.

Honorable Mention: Middlebelt Road Sinkhole

2011 New Install Project of the Year Winner: East Boston Branch Sewer

The 113-year-old East Boston Branch Sewer was in dire need of a renovation. Its outdated system carried a mix of sanitary sewage and stormwater to the East Boston Caruso Pump Station — located at the Chelsea Street Bridge — and then to Deer Island for treatment. During heavy rains, the system became overloaded and released excess flows into the Boston Harbor. The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) was ordered by a federal court to clean up the harbor, thus requiring a $90 million design and construction project to replace and rehabilitate 4.5 miles of its sewer system.

Through it all, Vancouver has been on the world’s stage.
